The land north of the Beaver Pond in Kanata is an accessible portion of the South March Highlands where you can see an example of the richness and beauty of the whole area. Kanata Northlands (KNL)/Urbandale Construction planned to start clearing the area this summer to build about 3,200 houses. They plan to preserve eight hectares of forest lining the beaver pond. The pond is an immensely popular spot for surrounding residents and is one of the reasons people chose to move there. The forests and trails north of the pond are just as important and are an essential part of the South March Highlands forest.
KNL had intended to start clear-cutting the forest on July 19th but, because of our research and work, we were able to postpone the cutting.
There is a conditional Plan of Subdivision for this residential development, approved by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). The plan is subject to 89 conditions before the subdivision can be constructed, including a requirement for City approval for the developer’s Tree Preservation Plan, as well as an archaeological plan and a stormwater plan. So far there is no clear evidence that KNL has fulfilled the required conditions that would allow them to begin clear-cutting.
We convinced the City of Ottawa that, until the OMB site plan conditions are explicitly approved by the City, KNL must not be allowed to proceed with clear-cutting of trees or any other site modifications on the lands they own in the South March Highlands.
And now, thanks to our efforts, on October 6, Ottawa City Council will vote on a motion to save these lands. Council will be considering a motion that the City acquire the 72 acres of land KNL (Urbandale & Richcraft) owns north of the Beaver Pond. Now we have a chance to save it! Please go to the How to Help section and write a letter to your Councillor and the Mayor today.
